County and of Morrow County." Spokane, WA: W. H. Lever, 1902. p. 549.

ISAAC R. ESTEB

to the venerable citizen and worthy pioneer whose name initiates this
paragraph, we are pleased to accord representation in this volume of chronicles
of Morrow county, since he has been one of the foremost men in promoting the
advancement of its welfare, always laboring assiduously for the upbuilding of
the county's interests, while he manifests a demeanor of uprightness and a life
of untarnished honor coupled with an unsullied reputation which is fully
sustained by sterling qualities of moral worth and manifest enterprise.
Mr. Esteb was born in Wayne county, Indiana, on September 1, 1828, being
the son of John M. and Nancy J. (Fisher) Esteb, natives, respectively, of North
Carolina and Kentucky. He passed the first twenty-five years of his life in his
native state, acquiring a good common school education and also taking up the
tilling of the soil. From this state he removed to Wayne county, Iowa, remaining
there ten years and giving his attention to agriculture, and then repaired to
Missouri and spent eleven years in the same occupation. From this last state he
came direct to Oregon, stopping first in the Willamette valley for four years
and then coming on to this county, where he settled at Gooseberry and succeeded
in getting the postoffice established there, himself being the incumbent for the
first ten years, or until 1893, discharging the exacting duties of this office
with perfect acceptability and efficiency. His first realty in the county was
secured through the exercise of his homestead right, which has been increased to
four hundred and eighty acres since. All of this line estate he is farming to
wheat and is very successful in the raising of this cereal. For eight years
since he came here he was occupied in addition to his other duties in operating
a blacksmith shop. His farm is well-improved, having a comfortable two-story
house and good outbuildings and a well-selected orchard. In politics Mr. Esteb
takes the active citizen's part, having attended the first Republican county
convention held in Morrow county, being chairman of the same, and has been a
delegate to most all others since that time. He is a school director and has
been ever since coming to the county and is ever laboring for the advancement of
the educational interests of the county. He affiliates with the Masons, holding
his membership in lone. His church associations are with the Christian
denomination, where he is well thought of and holds a prominent place.
Mr. Esteb has been twice married, the first time being in Indiana, Miss
Nancy J. Sweeney there becoming his wife. His second marriage was contracted in
Kings Valley, Benton county, Oregon, on June 13, 1877, Miss Alice, daughter of
Samuel and Martha (Miller) Rice, then becoming his bride. He has eight children,
five by the former marriage and three by the last. Their names are as follows:
Jacob W., John T., Charles, Walter L., Samuel O., Eunice E., Fred Rice, Isaac N.
deceased. In all the relations of life, both public and private, Mr. Esteb has
manifested a commendable spirit and upright walk, ever adhering to the exact
line of truth and probity and displaying a jealous discharge of every
responsibility incumbent upon him.
