G. W. PAIGE

is a farmer residing four miles south and west of Albion. His parents were
W. H. and Hattie E. (Drew) Paige. They are both buried in Albion, his mother
dying June 30, 1890, and his father November 9, 1898. He was born in the old
"Badger" state June 19, 1861. It was in 1873 that his parents gathered all
together and journeyed to a far country to find what fortune had stored for them
in the land of Oregon. For five years the family tried the state where they had
landed, and finally decided to turn to Washington. Few of those that have
turned to Washington to find a home have turned away without having that for
which they sought. Whitman county was the place they selected, and soon they
found government land that suited them and they took a homestead. Mr. Paige, who
already had acquired a fair public-school training, lingered a little longer
over his books in Palouse city, and then turned to the sterner duties of life.
He commenced farming for himself in 1885. His wisdom was seen in that at this
important time of his career he sought "a helpmeet," for it is recorded that on
March 7, 1885, he was joined in the holy bonds of matrimony to Miss Melissa. A.
Hibbs, daughter of R. H. and Louisa (Huffman) Hibbs. It was 1889 before he
bought the place where he now resides. He owns a quarter section of fine Whitman
county soil and tills it in a way becoming a son of this thrifty county. His
plan is to diversify his crops and rotate, as in the older and more experienced
sections of the east, keeping sufficient stock to sustain the farm and consume a
portion of its products. He owns stock in the Guy Co-operative Association, and
has been entrusted with the responsibilities of president of the association.
He is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.
Mr. and Mrs. Paige have six children, as follows: William R., born March
26, 1887; Ettie Pearl, born August 25, 1888; Myrtle L., born October 12, 1890;
Sophronia J., born August 30, 1896; Hettie V., born October 21, 1899; Melissa
A., born January 22, 1901.
